About

Welcome to POTTERY☺︎IKIRO

IKIRO (生きろ) is a Japanese word, the imperative form of the verb ”to live”. I like this word because it means more than “don’t give up”. It is a call to live fully, honestly and attentively even when it is hard.

Hello, this is Ali. I’m originally from Hong Kong. I moved to Birmingham, UK, in 2022 and now call it home.

My pottery journey began in 2020, when I took a wheel-throwing course at Useless Studio in Hong Kong. Since then, I have continued learning and experimenting with various forms and techniques. I was drawn ever deeper into the infinite universe of handmade ceramics.

In 2023, I resumed my practice at the Sundragon Community Pottery Studio in Moseley.

In 2024, I was honoured to showcase my works at the Stoke on Clay Festival, which was an encouraging and inspiring milestone.

Thank you for visiting. I hope my work resonates with you in some way.☺︎

☺︎ Handmade Disclaimer

Each piece is handcrafted by me, a ceramic artisan, with the utmost care and attention to detail. Because every item is made one at a time, you may notice subtle variations in size, shape, colour, or surface texture. These minor distinctions are inherent in the process, and they’re what make each work truly one of a kind. Thank you for appreciating the uniqueness that comes with handmade art.
